Just a reminder that Lee "Blinky" Rizor's memorial will be held
tomorrow, Saturday Feb 28th at 2pm.

The Windsor Club
123 W. Windsor Rd.
Glendale Ca.

I will be delivering the eulogy, and a couple of others have volunteered
to speak.

Also, Blinky's ashes will be shipped back to Michigan to be interred in
his family plot at Battle Creek Memorial Park on March 13th. The family
has asked for a private graveside service, but his ex and daughter will
be holding a small service for friends in the memorial park chapel at 1pm.

For those unable to attend in person, that translates to 10PM in the UK,
and (I think) 8AM on Sunday in Sydney. But such mundane things as time
zones aren't significant in such matters.

It is so rare that a newsgroup exhibits any sort of community that I
must comment.

Blinky.

The Shark.

Tweaking us all with every post. And elucidating us all in the process.

How many of you have Googled "shark" or "blinky" or "what does a shark eat"?

If I wanted to be remembered here I could only ask for this: "Don't Blink."

On my cruise there were several times I spied fins out on the ocean.

I laughed. ("Whales? Porpoises? Dolphins?") NO! Must be Sharks!!!

I looked forward to coming back and writing to Blinky about it and
wondering how funny it was that I saw fins and thought of him.

Good guy. Funny guy. Helpful guy.

We are poorer for our loss.

I am diminished by the loss. Smaller. And sad.

Dagnabbit, I'm getting old. While I never met Blinky in person, I've read
many of his posts and enjoyed his contribution to the community.

May God speed your soul and smile upon your family.

Geez man, people can't even die anymore without some maniac throwing a
fit. You should have seen the scummy nut cases in alt.php yesterday on

What?
Is this some sort of sick joke?
I've been away for...Well, for a few years now...I've just come back to see
a handfull of posts that suggest Blinky has passed away.
I'm rather shocked by this.
Is it a rude question to ask how it happened?

I haven't seen fLameDogg post in ages. I sent DC an e-mail after the
news broke, but I can't be sure he got it. Tiger came back to n.s.r
for a little while last year but then left again. The mathematician at
McGill is R.A.G. Seely -- his web page at the university is still up,
so I guess he's still there (and still a nice guy). Max Quordlepleen
shows up occasionally under another posting name (which I can't
recall) -- we should remember to tell him if we see him.

I observed a few minutes of silence by myself yesterday while the
memorial gathering was going on. Every so often, I have to visit
Michigan, and if I can schedule some time to get to Battle Creek, I'll
swing by and say hi to The Shark.

Aingon, thanks very much for all your posts keeping us informed.

Hi :)

I don't keep in touch like I used to and don't, sadly, know where
everyone has gone. I gave up on 24hr and freeware. Too much going
on in RL in the past few years. Doesn't >>Q<< still visit
freeware? I wish "we all" would get together a bit and have some
'fun' on occasion.

I do miss you all!

I saw him post recently in the last couple of months and never really
noticed until I saw some posts about him a week or two later. Being
usenet, I questioned if it might be some clown posting someone died
(you know, they go on vacation for too long, all sorts of rumors happen
and people like to cause drama sometimes), but in this case it was
indeed true.

> Is it a rude question to ask how it happened?

I don't recall what someone said or know much about it. I guess he was
ill and become weak and couldn't hold down food or water and then the
notice about his death was posted by some people that knew him in
person.

I thought people only died (in the modern world) of pneumonia if they
were already ill with something else?

Though in all the times i hastily jumped out of the pool when blinky
swam up:) i never recall him saying anything about any previous or
chronic conditions.

Even his complaints about stress that took him to the Joshua tree park
to de-stress & where he took some lovely photos never seemed anything
more than the usual, run of the mill, ordinary, everyday, modern world
stress.

Though we only swam in the same pool, and i really barely knew him, he
was nice enough to be missed.

I was reviewing some of the email he sent while he was sick, and
something jumped out that I hadn't noticed before. He mentioned that he
was having trouble holding onto a new bar of soap with his right hand.
I'm wondering if perhaps he didn't have all kinds of things happening to
him at once.

Nope - other than a couple of chronic skin issues he was basically
healthy, at least to my knowledge, and I'm the one he would have told
first. He certainly didn't tell me he was as sick as he obviously was.

Wow! Thanks for sharing.

In my experience, the problem could be either a pinched nerve or (at
the very least "a hint of") the onset of arthritis. I don't know what
else it could be.

There has to be something else (heart?), but I'm not a health care
professional.

Not necessarily. People still die of the flu and its aftermath. That's
why we try to vaccinate against it. The second sickest I've ever been
was with influenza. I'm a strong, healthy, middle-aged adult and I was
so sick, with high fever and respiratory symptoms and terrible body
pain, that I was more than a little scared. And it took me a long time
to get well.

(The absolute sickest I've ever been was with dengue fever that I got
from a mosquito bite down in Mexico and I was more than a little scared,
I thought I was going to die.)

Even "just" the flu can crash your system, creating a cascade of all
sorts of symptoms and failures.

He probably didn't know how sick he was. In modern times we've
forgotten how deadly the flu can be. The influenza epidemic of 1918
killed over 50 million people; young, old, rural, urban, rich or poor.

Medical advances give flu victims a better shot at recovering but it
still comes down to supporting the patient while their own immune system
fights off the virus.

The flu shots don't offer 100% protection, especially not when they
guess wrong about the season's dominant strain. But even if you do
catch the flu the shot's effects can lessen the severity of your
symptoms. I work as a substitute teacher. My exposure is massive, and
if I get sick, the numbers exposed to me are massive. And then they
expose their families ... So I get the damned shots.

And that's my recommendation to everybody who doesn't have a medical
reason not to... Get the damned shots.

Want to help medical research work on a possible cure for dengue,
using spare time on your computer? This group lets you do that in the
background:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

If you don't think any of their other projects deserve equal priority,
select only Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together as your preferred
project, but then I'd suggest that you also allow them to send you
workunits from other projects when they don't have any available
from that project, simply to make more room on their hard drives
for more workunits from that project.

However, I haven't seen very much activity from that project since
a hurricane hit Texas near one of the worksites for that project,
so don't be surprised if you end up contributing computer time
mainly to their other projects.
